Reset Routine

Ashley Schwab Updated by Ashley Schwab

When your skin is flaring, reacting, or not improving… the goal isn’t more products — it’s less irritation.

This is your reset

Step 1: Cleanse (or skip if needed)

  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser
  • Or just rinse with lukewarm water if your skin is very sensitive

👉 No scrubs, no actives, no exfoliating cleansers

Step 2: Moisturize (immediately)

  • Apply a thick cream (not a light lotion)
  • Do this within a few minutes of washing

👉 This helps reduce water loss before your skin dries out

Step 3: Seal (optional but powerful)

  • Add a thin layer of an ointment (like petrolatum) on top
  • Especially helpful at night or on stubborn areas

👉 This locks everything in and protects the barrier

Step 4: Remove everything else (temporarily)

Pause:

  • Serums
  • Actives (acids, retinoids, vitamin C, etc.)
  • Fragrance-heavy products
  • “Extra” steps

👉 Even products that normally work can irritate during a flare

How long to do this

Stick with this routine for 3–7 days minimum (or until your skin feels calmer and less reactive)

What to expect

  • Less stinging/burning first
  • Then reduced itching
  • Then gradual improvement in texture

Simple doesn’t mean basic — it means giving your skin the space to repair.
